We Need You As A Volunteer!
The Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad is a resident squad. This means the active duty crew members respond directly from the Squad headquarters. This keeps our response time low. We have dorm-style sleep quarters for crew members staying overnight. Additional members for second or third calls respond by pager if a full crew is not available at the building.
Types of Membership
The Squad has two types of members: Riding and Associate.
Riding
Riding Members are Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) - Help your neighbor, save a life. Respond to emergency calls and help make a difference.
- Free CPR and EMT training provided
- Tuition and child-care reimbursement available
- Pension program (LOSAP)
Requirements:
- At least 17-years old.
- Valid New Jersey driver license. You must have a non-restricted NJ driver license in order to drive the ambulance "hot", i.e. to calls and the hospital.
- Pull one duty period a week. Either a 4-hour daytime or 12-hour overnight shift.
- Take and pass the EMT-Basic training class. The cost is paid for by the NJ EMT Training Fund. Classes are run in the Spring, Summer and Fall at the Squad Building as well as other places around NJ
Associate
Associate Members are members who help the Squad. Currently, one type of Associate Member is Dispatcher. Often Dispatchers decide to becoming riding members when they turn 17 and get their driver license.
Dispatcher
Train at the Squad to answer calls and dispatch EMS crews.
Requirements:
- At least a Junior in high school.
- One 2-hour duty period every 1-2 weeks.
- Assist once a month on weekends, possibly overnight, when the tenant dispatchers are off.
How do I apply?
Interested? Great! You are welcome to stop by our Squad building, ask questions of any member there and pick up a riding member (EMT) (PDF 140K) or Dispatcher (PDF 115K) application. There is always someone in the building.
(If you need a PDF viewer, Adobe Reader is free from Adobe's website.)
Return the completed application to us either in person or by mail.
